Subject

The topography and human uses of North Staffordshire as seen in 1794.

Description

Appendix to General view of the Agriculture of the County of Stafford (1796) by William Pitt, a book on the agricultural improvement of Staffordshire. The Appendix treats North Staffordshire, plus some of the more difficult hilly land in South Staffordshire (such as the Rowley Hills). At the end of the Appendix there is a sunstantial annotated plant-list with local Staffordshire names, with notes on medicinal, fumigatory and other useful herb-lore. Who knew that English pond-weed could be made into durable writing paper? This Appendix is being upload as an exemplar of the sort of earlier 'baseline' work that the North Staffordshire Naturalists' Field Club would have had access to from their foundation in 1865 onwards.
